This page has helped me tremendously by giving me the confidence to pursue music and medicine! I am pursuing a BA in Music and completing all of the pre-reqs for pharmacy school! So far it has been fine but I am going into my second year and classes are getting tougher. I also struggle with feeling inadequate for applying for Pharmacy school but that also serves as my biggest motivator. Biggest advice is to complete AP classes in high school and to plan out most/all of your courses before/around the time when you start school.

There are many factors that go into choosing a college that will provide you with the kind of education that will take you where you think you want to go. See our article How to choose the best school for yourself. If you do want to study music AND prepare to be able to go on to medical school, you’ll want to consider schools where you can double major. Note that we do offer fee-based consulting for students/parents who need more focused assistance than they can find on »Æ¹Ïapp. Simply contact us regarding this service.

I am very intrigued by the possibility of this idea, as I do plan on obtaining a doctorates in Alternative Medicine, as well as a degree in Audio Production within my lifetime. It is exciting, yet slightly overwhelming to venture the notion of working towards a B.S. in audio production, and that degree possibly aiding in my progress towards medical school?
I really would like to know more about this. Thank you so much for this article.-

Music majors take increasingly difficult music theory courses as they progress through college. They are also required to be in ensembles, take lessons,
practice, and take other music-related courses. So waiting until your junior year would extend your time as an undergraduate and it could be a lot more difficult to audition and get accepted as a music major. If you major in music, you may be able to get most if not all of the required science courses under your belt either during the school year or over the summer, to prepare you to take an MCAT test prep or review course.

I’ve been in a career tech Allied Health class since my junior year. I’m now finishing up my senior year in high school, and after participating in orchestra and playing viola for eight years, I’ve found that I also want to see what I can pursue in music. However, the school I’m going to for my first few years doesn’t offer a double major program, nor can I really have a minor due to some complications with funds. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t know whether I should make music or medicine my major while going into this school. Should I just do orchestra on the side?

Thanks for your comment!

And yes, we strongly encourage you to ask questions of the schools you’re interested in, re: majoring in both Music + Pre-Med or Science. Use the forms on the pages of participating schools on »Æ¹Ïapp to do that!

I currently have the top average in my class and I am involved in a variety of extracurricular activities so I know what it feels like to be busy, but I am not sure if I would be able to handle the amount of work required for double majoring in these two fields. Unfortunately, I have not visited many colleges but I am hoping to talk with many people at different colleges to see how well it would work with their college. Anyway, thank you for your amazing site! I have come across it many different times and you have helped me gain confidence.

I was going to respond in a similar manner before seeing Brenna’s comment. In regards to your response, music therapy can be a medically-oriented career if you want it to be. There are many MT-BCs working in various medical settings from hospitals to assisted living facilities all across the country. Some universities are even combining their Music Therapy degrees to be within both their school of music and college of health and sciences. This includes more biologically and medically based classes as the field expands more towards a new branch of medicine. In short, music therapy is a viable career option for someone wanting to pursue both music and medicine.

Music therapy is not a medically-oriented career. Please see all the articles on this website specifically focused on music therapy, in order to learn more about what the profession is all about, what’s required in the education of a music therapist, what paths music therapists choose in their careers, and much more.
