I’m an actively performing guitarist / singer and play multiple times a week. If I’m concerned I may lose my vocals during upcoming shows, I do what a lot of professional band performers do. I lower the key I’m singing in by a half step… sometimes as much as a whole step down. Doing so is typically not perceived by the audience, but it makes it a whole lot easier when you get to the high parts of the songs and majorly avoids straining your vocal cords. This works extremely well. Guitars can either be tuned down, &/or altered by use of a capo. And most modern electronic keyboards can automatically adjust pitches to accommodate vocals without the keyboardist having to change the way he/she is playing. And the drummers….well…they don’t have to change anything other than to maybe play more quietly if need be, lol!

We suggest you find a voice teacher who can work with you virtually to help you figure out what’s going on with your voice and learn how to maximize your range in a healthy way.

I’m an alto singer, but my problem is that when I’m singing in my highest pitch, my voice cracks and I can’t go beyond that range. So how do I go beyond my current vocal range ?

Nice one, you are extremely right. I do that almost every time before going for my voice lesson or Performance, even before singing with my Cathedral choir on sunday morning. It really helps

I used to have the capacity to just sing in mid-section voice and falsetto.

I once read that Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones would go down to hotel basements on tour breaks, singing along to tapes of Stones songs to keep his voice in shape through the break in tour. Just goes to show even big screamin rock stars like to care for their voices.

You’re probably not doing anything wrong, just not keeping your voice hydrated enough: maybe see and EMT

Lots of great info including but, Most of us have heard someone with a nasal voice. It has that high pitched, almost whiny quality which can turn people off in a hurry. This is not the type of voice which helps one’s professional or social life.

Figure out your vocal range and try to identify where your vocal break occurs. These are the pitches where the voice of a new singer “flips” from one register to another. For some beginners, the voice may not “flip” but there is still some perceived difficulty to singing clearly without changing the character of the sound.

Begin at Middle C on the piano and gradually work your way all over the scale. Know your reach and its limits. When singing, your breathing ought to be profound, low, and supported. Raise your hard sense of taste with every breath to open the throat. Be beyond any doubt to drink heaps of water when you sing so that your vocal folds won’t dry. – Stephanie Thompson

You’re correct in thinking that all the yelling and cheering can injure your voice. We encourage you to see a voice specialist to see if you’ve done any damage to your vocal chords already, and to find out ways of safely doing your job as squad captain so you can also sing. We also urge you to follow the tips in this article and also read articles like this one – about the value of , and this one – about .
